Open data from GetWindowCost

3 datasets on the cost of replacing windows in the United States, free under CC BY 4.0. Every one is downloadable as CSV and JSON, needs no signup or API key, and is built from named federal sources — Bureau of Labor Statistics wages, Federal Reserve producer price indexes, and Energy Information Administration bills. Journalists, researchers and publishers are welcome to republish any of it with attribution; the embed snippets below are plain HTML for exactly that.

1. The Window Cost Index

The estimated installed cost of one reference window — a standard double-hung, vinyl, double-pane Low-E retrofit — across 237 US metro areas, from $653 in San Juan-Bayamon-Caguas, PR to $833 in Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH. Each row carries the metro's median glazier wage and its labor factor against the $27.44/hr national median. Wages are BLS May 2025; the national price trend is FRED PPI as of 2026-04-01.

What it is not. These are modelled estimates, not quotes, invoices or contractor prices — no transaction data is behind them. Only labor varies by metro; window material is priced on a national market, so the metro spread is a labor spread. There is no historical series per metro, and no per-contractor or per-brand pricing.

2. Window rebates, 2026

15 federal, state and utility programs, each classified by what it actually does for windows. Of the 14 still active, 4 pay a direct per-window rebate (ID, OR, WA), 8 bundle windows into a wider home-efficiency rebate, and 2 run energy programs that exclude windows entirely. The remaining one is the federal 25C window credit, recorded as expired — it is kept in the file rather than deleted, because "this used to exist" is the fact most homeowners are checking. What it is not. This is a snapshot, not a live feed — 10 of 15 amounts are as-reported by the program rather than independently verified, and every record carries an amount_confidence field saying which. Utility programs change and exhaust their funding mid-year, so confirm terms at the linked source before relying on one. Not included: income-qualified eligibility thresholds, application timing, or municipal programs below utility level.

3. Energy savings by state

The estimated annual household energy saving from replacement windows in all 51 US jurisdictions — the 50 states plus DC — led by Hawaii at $178$458/year. Modelled as a 718% cut in the average residential bill — the low end replacing double-pane, the high end single-pane — against U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) 2025 state averages (national average $150/month).

What it is not. These are modelled figures, never metered ones — no home in this dataset was measured before and after. They are state averages, so they say nothing about a particular house, its climate zone, or its existing windows, and they cover electricity bills rather than total household energy. Payback periods are not in the file; the calculator works those out per project.
