About GetWindowCost

GetWindowCost is a free, independent resource that calculates window replacement costs using public federal data. We exist because most window cost information online is produced by companies that want to sell you windows or sell your contact information to contractors. We do neither.

How the Calculator Works

Every estimate our calculator produces is derived from a formula with documented inputs. There are no black-box numbers or “proprietary databases” — you can trace every figure back to its source.

Installed cost = Material + Labor + Supplies

Material cost

Base cost × frame multiplier × glass multiplier × PPI adjustment

Source: Contractor surveys, manufacturer data

Labor cost

Hours per type × BLS glazier wage × regional factor × contractor markup

Source: RSMeans labor hours, BLS OEWS May 2024

Supplies

8% of material cost

Source: Industry standard allowance

Regional adjustment

586 zip-code-level labor factors from 206 metro areas

Source: BLS Occupational Employment Statistics

Data Sources

We pull from five federal and industry data sources. Each is refreshed on a documented schedule.

SourceWhat It ProvidesRefresh
BLS OEWSGlazier hourly wages by metro area (SOC 47-2121)Annual (May release)
FRED (Federal Reserve)Producer Price Indexes for wood and metal window manufacturingMonthly
EIAResidential energy bills by state (for ROI calculations)Annual

RSMeansLabor hours per window type (retrofit vs. full-frame)Annual

Data Pipeline & Update Process

Our cost data is not static. When source data changes, every estimate on the site updates:

  1. Ingest — BLS wage files, FRED PPI series, and EIA energy data are pulled into structured JSON datasets.
  2. Normalize — Raw data is mapped to our 206 metro areas and 50 states using BLS area codes and FIPS codes.
  3. Calculate — The pricing formula runs against every combination of window type, frame material, and location to produce cost ranges.
  4. Validate — Output is cross-checked against RSMeans benchmark ranges and flagged if outside expected bounds.
  5. Publish — Updated estimates deploy to all 486 pages simultaneously.

Last data pipeline run: March 2026. Next scheduled update: when BLS releases May 2025 OEWS data (expected Q2 2026).

Editorial Standards

  • Every number has a source. Cost claims in our guides are cross-referenced against the calculator's output. Inline citations link to primary sources.
  • No pay-for-placement. We do not accept payment to feature, rank, or recommend any manufacturer, brand, or contractor.
  • Transparent methodology. The formula above is the actual formula our calculator uses. We don't round up to justify higher estimates or pad numbers to make referrals look like savings.
  • Regular updates. When BLS releases new wage data or FRED publishes new PPI indexes, we re-run our data pipeline and update every estimate on the site.
  • Built with AI. This site's content and calculator were built using AI tools, with all cost data grounded in the federal sources listed above. We believe AI + authoritative data produces more accurate, less biased estimates than content written to generate leads.

Accuracy & Limitations

Our estimates are designed to give homeowners a realistic range before they request quotes. Here is what our data can and cannot do:

  • What it covers: Material cost, labor cost, and standard installation for common window types in standard residential construction. Regional labor rate adjustments for 206 metro areas.
  • What it does not cover: Structural modifications (enlarging or shrinking openings), lead paint or asbestos abatement, permits and inspection fees (vary by municipality), high-rise or commercial installations, or custom architectural windows.
  • Expected accuracy: For standard replacement scenarios, our estimates typically fall within 10-15% of actual contractor quotes. Outliers occur in markets with extreme labor shortages or for projects requiring structural work.

How GetWindowCost Makes Money

Transparency about monetization is important for a cost-estimation tool. Here is how we operate:

  • Currently: GetWindowCost is a free resource with no revenue model. We do not sell leads, gate the calculator behind email capture, or run display ads.
  • Future plans: We may introduce affiliate links to window retailers or optional contractor matching. If we do, these will be clearly labeled and will never influence our cost estimates or recommendations. The calculator will always remain free and ungated.
